The infant offers his parents absolutely nothing. No money, no skill, no words of wisdom. If he had pockets they would be empty. To see him lying in the bassinet is to see utter helplessness. What is there to love? Whatever it is, his mom and dad find it. Just look at mom’s face as she nurses her baby. Just watch dad’s eyes as he cradles the child. And just try to harm or speak evil of the infant. If you do, you’ll encounter a mighty strength. For the love of a parent is a mighty force. Jesus once asked, if we humans who are sinful have such love, how much more would God, the sinless and selfless king, love us? Could it be that the greatest privilege of parenting is experiencing a fraction of God’s love for his children? But what happens when the child of the father becomes the enemy of the father? We’d best find out, because according to Scripture that’s exactly what we’ve done. 1. Our need for reconciliation
