I read a true story recently about slaves on the auction block. Seems that a master bought them, paid the full price, but rather than put them to work, he set them free. Incredibly, however, not all of the slaves left! Some, for reasons known only to them, refused to leave their chains and post. Now, I’m not too bright, but only one word describes that decision: d-u-m-b. But even that doesn’t compare to three transactions made by people involved in the cross. In and around the drama of the crucifixion, I’ve located four transactions. Three of them are dumb, and one of them is the greatest transaction in history.
1. Dumb Transactions
a. The transaction of the soldiers: a place in heaven for a
perk on earth. (John 19:23-24)
b. The transaction of the crowds: the approval of people over
the approval of Christ. (Mark 15:6-14)
c. The transaction of Judas: silver for this life instead of a
Savior for the next. (John12:6)
d. Our transaction? “What can a man give in exchange for his
soul?” (Mark 8:37)
2. History’s Greatest Transaction
I Timothy 2:6; I Peter 1:18-19
