04 He Chose the Nails - He Chose The Nails (Pieces of Passion Series) (MP3)The carpenter is shoved to the ground. His arms are stretched against the beam. A soldier presses a knee against a forearm and a spike against a wrist. Jesus turns his face to see the nail just as the soldier lifts a hammer to strike it. For both – the carpenter and the soldier – this is the last chance to reverse the events. Couldn’t Jesus bring it to an end? With a flex of the bicep or a clench of the fist, the drama would be over. And the soldier? Couldn’t he change his mind? “Stop!” we yell over the landscape of history. “He’s done nothing wrong!” But the soldier doesn’t stop. And the fist doesn’t clench. And the moment isn’t avoided. Why didn’t the soldier stop? That’s easy: he was under orders. And why didn’t Jesus resist? Because he loved us. That is wonderfully true. But also, only partially true. I suggest that as he rolled his head to the side and saw the mallet and the nail, and the hand holding them, he saw something else that made him stay there. 1. The hand was the hand of God. Isaiah 31:3 2. The nail was the tool of God. Colossians 2:14 3. The promise is the promise of God. Date preached: October 3, 1999
