"A man named Simon from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was coming from the fields to the city. The soldiers forced Simon to carry the cross for Jesus" (Mark 15:21 NCV). Simon enters the divine drama with sketchy details; a foreigner from Cyrene in Africa. No doubt he had traveled many miles and exhausted much expense for the privilege of a Jerusalem Passover meal. Simon of Cyrene was plucked out of the crowd, forced to carry the cross. Had he ever heard of Christ? Had he ever seen Jesus? What was he doing in Jerusalem? We don't know. All we know for certain is this: he shouldered the cross of Christ. He did literally what God calls us to do figuratively: take up the cross and follow Christ.
